The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) offers training and certification programs that go above and beyond the typical training to help educators working with all populations.

The Student Mental Health Certificate (SMHC) certification was created by a team of experts, including international leaders in the educational field, Tier 1 University researchers, master educators, and clinical professionals. The program was designed based on feedback from your peers and leaders in education to address the most-needed training topics for special education and general education teachers, as well as paraprofessionals.

SMHC Eligibility Requirements

  • Two Years Experience:
    Applicants must have two years’ experience working in a field that treats or supports individuals with cognitive disorders.
  • 14 CE hours:
    Applicants must have earned 14 hours of continuing education that directly relate to cognitive disorders within the last two years. These CEs can be earned through IBCCES University as part of the SMHC application process. If you have already completed 14 hours of continuing education within the last 2 years, check here to make sure the hours can be applied toward your SMHC .
  • Competency Exam:
    Applicants must pass the SMHC Competency Exam. The exam is taken online and is included in the price of your SMHC application.
  • Registry Fee: $295

Renewal Requirements:

  • Renewal fee: $149 every two years
  • 14 Additional (CEU) in related area
  • Maintain active status as a SMHC and Compliance with Code of Ethics

Registration fees include application review by IBCCES board and Access to the Student Mental Health Certificate Exam.

*Registration fee will be refunded if the applicant is not approved by the board for any reason during the application process (minus $150 to cover processing and exam fee). Otherwise all sales are final. Registration indicates that you have read and agreed to the IBCCES Financial Terms and Conditions, Ethical Responsibilities and Standards of Practice.

Additional SMHC Benefits

Once you have completed the requirements for the SMHC:

  • You will be issued an official Certification Number;
  • Your name will be listed in the International Registry as a Student Mental Health Certificate;
  • You will receive an official certificate printed on diploma stock to display in your classroom or office;
  • You will also receive an authorized wallet ID card to demonstrate your new credentials to parents, employers, insurance professionals and others;
  • A digital badge is available upon request for use on digital resumes and social media;
  • You will be granted access to the IBCCES Online Member Community which is loaded with member benefits such as free training opportunities, best practices and access some of the latest research in your field;
  • Your credential number can be verified by employers at ibcces.org
