Drowning is among the leading causes of death of individuals with autism (National Autism Association). With the IBCCES Autism Training for Lifeguards we aim to reduce that statistic. This training focuses on the latest research and best practices in autism and other cognitive disorders, including identifying swimmers with autism, safety needs, and communication strategies. This training is a component of the Certified Autism Centerâ„¢ Program which aims to train organizations such as water parks, amusement parks, park and rec facilities and more to be an inclusive and welcoming space for all guests including those with autism or other cognitive disorders.
91% of all deaths for children with ASD were accidental drownings
Aquatic activities and hydrotherapy have been shown to increase social interaction, confidence, and independence in children with ASD
Recent reports show that children with ASD are 160 times more likely to die from drowning than the general population of childrenÂ
